I was killing time this afternoon when I clicked through onto one of those inspirational videos on Facebook. The kind with swelling music and subtitles. Ordinarily, I’d have closed out the tab but seeing Denzel Washington in front of a podium made me want to stop and listen.

His speech shook me not just for its inspirational tone but its prescriptive advice.

It took me years to put my dreams into practice. When I came to discover the power of a self-imposed deadline everything changed.

I can’t tell you how productive I’ve become by setting goals for myself. Daily ones, weekly ones, fortnightly ones. Goals that push me to confront my insecurities time and again.

We don’t grow by wishing it so. Hard work, discipline and failure are the only way forward.
