Cherish It

I awoke to the news that John Singleton, the visionary American filmmaker had passed away at the age of fifty-one.

My obsession with American culture has always stemmed from its bitter dualities.

While African-Americans have endured one of the most painful plights in modern history, their ability to remain resilient has given birth to some marvelous movements.

I’ve spent thousands of hours diving into these creations. Whether it be the voice of Billie Holliday, the power of Charlie Parker or the prose of Ralph Ellison.

Singleton’s debut feature, Boyz N’ The Hood, is one of my favourite films. It opened my eyes and set me on the path I walk today.

Sobering moments like this remind us to be grateful for all the things that have made us what we are.

Cherish it now before it’s gone tomorrow.
