“To ‘have’ running water you must let go of it and let it run. The same is true of life and of God.” — Alan Watts
It’s easy to become exasperated with great change. To fall into a hyperventilating mess when your favourite restaurant up and changes the recipe to their signature dish. But the ultimate reality is that constant change is an inevitable and organic part of life.
I am knee deep in Alan W. Watts seminal masterpiece The Wisdom Of Insecurity, a wonderful guide on how to be truly present with the world around us. For as he so deftly remarks, the here and now is all we have to savour.
“Most of us believe in order to feel secure, in order to make our individual lives seem valuable and meaningful. Belief has thus become an attempt to hang on to life, to grasp and keep it for one’s own. But you cannot understand life and its mysteries as long as you try to grasp it.”
To truly be ‘in the moment’ we need to have the courage to take a deep breath and release our grip from around life’s neck. When we remove the ego from our daily slog, we begin to unveil the true mystery of life and everything that goes along with it.
