Old Habits
“Study the top stories and you’ll notice a pattern: they all polarize people. If you make it threaten people’s three B’s: behavior, belief or belongings— you get a huge virus-like dispersion.” — Tim Ferriss
I came across the quote above while reading Ryan Holliday’s Trust Me I’m Lying, a sobering look at the current state of journalism in the age of social media.
According to Holliday, a self-professed media manipulator, it’s hard to ignore the fact that every viral news story swipes at our base emotions. Clickbait headlines inspiring fear, hatred or ecstatic enjoyment at the expense of others.
Like or not these stories distract us from investing our precious time in the right places. So the next time an article leaves you fuming, have the courage to put your phone away and confront your emotions.
Happiness is all about perspective.
It’s integral to make time for memories that leave you feeling good about you.
