Ice Creamed 🍨

I tuned into The Michelle Obama Podcast over breakfast yesterday, listening in to the debut episode with her life partner Barack Obama. The conversation speaks to the underlying importance of values and their resonance throughout our earliest years.

Halfway through their chat, the former President highlights a profound societal shift in the late 1970s which encouraged an unhealthy reliance on materialism and single-handedly ushered in the age of FOMO. Michelle Obama likens this shift to ice cream. With the profusion of flavours today, kids are no longer satisfied with one tub of ice-cold goodness. They want to own them all.

No matter how much we have these days, there is always something out there that distracts us from savouring our lot. I know because I suffer from this endless craving on a daily basis. Be it a new car with central heating, a fly-looking pair of kicks or an impromptu trip to the Yucatán Peninsula.

Through meditation and reflective journaling, I’m learning to acknowledge these incessant material yearnings for what they are. For when we feed this monster without care or consideration, we do so to the detriment of our lives and most cherished relationships.
