“Who is this person I’ve been calling Ethan? I spent a couple weeks with a cruel case of the blues (the state of the nation not helping) and decided to come out of it with the only answer I could grab: I am my choices.” — Ethan Hawke
I soaked up John Lahr’s poignant profile on the Texan polymath this afternoon on my lunch break. And while I was blown away at Ethan Hawke’s incessant creative drive it was his final offering in the quote above that left my mind stirring.
For so many of us, our very identity is defined by the world around us. Our family, friends, acquaintances, and offspring (furry or otherwise). How this community receives us is how we piece together our inner reflection.
Yet Hawke’s potent takeaway, a reflexive response to the recent pandemic lockdown, gets at a larger idea.
We are what we do. Not what we say, think or dream but how we put one foot in front of the other.
When we take the time to return to this fundamental truth we learn to see our reflection in a whole new light.
