Birth Dazed
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” — G.B. Shaw
Today is my thirtieth birthday and I wanted to mark the occasion with the image above for a few reasons. First off it’s a ripper of a photo — I mean cop that thousand yard stare on my dial. Secondly it is first-hand evidence to my introduction to ice cream (a game-changer, ladies & germs). To top it off I’m soaking up some cosmic rays in my birthday suit (old habits die hard).
While some people are good at taking these annual occasions by the cojones and sucking every last second out of the day I ain’t one of them. I’m the other kind of birthday boy — the sad sack of potatoes who is predisposed to hang his head like a chastised labrador. Ever the dramatist, I always seem to be mourning my youth, terrified to accept the pending invitation to grow up and make a difference.
From an early age I was a human sponge, soaking up everything and anything that entered my periphery. A voracious consumer, I loved to read, tune into new music and veg out to a wide variety of visual content. In the last few years however I’ve been learning the power of giving, harnessing the good energy in my life and sending it back into the world around me.
At first glance, such a self-less choice is a scary proposition, putting your neck on the line without receiving in kind. Yet there is a certain power that comes with giving back, a sense that you’re actively encouraging good-will in the world around you.
Looking to the future I have a lot of reasons to be grateful. For one thing I’ve come into myself in the last few years and have a very clear idea of what I want to work towards down the line. In the process I want to keep passing it down, lighting the path behind me in the hopes of making the road ahead a little less precaruous for the next lotta anxiety driven louts.
Thank you to all my readers for supporting me on the road thus far. Just knowing you beautiful people are out there puts a smile on my dial and I can’t wait to see where we go from here.
XOXOXO
